On Thursday, May 8, the students of the 5th and 6th grades of our school held their final annual excursion with a spring hike in the lush green area of Agios Thomas and Agia Varvara.
The excursion, like last year, was offered by the Heraklion Naturalist Association (fysi.gr). The association covered the students’ transportation costs, and the excursion was free. This year, we were joined by any parents who wanted to participate.
Our route started from Agia Varvara. Then, through an oak forest, we passed through Pirouniana to the watermill and the church of Agios Georgios of Khostos, where we also encountered the stream of the Axedianos River. Then we climbed to the ruined village of Axendi and from there to Agios Thomas and the impressive Roman Tombs. Then, through the picturesque alleys, we descended to the lush green landscape of Panagia Kardiotissa, where we all had a picnic together.
We warmly thank the Heraklion Nature Association and especially the president, Giorgos Zacharakis, and the vice president, Stelios Kontakis, who accompanied us.
